Career and Technical Certificate
An in-person information session is required for enrollment in the Surgical Technology program.
In 1988, the first surgical technology class was offered at the College of Central Florida.
The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP); 25400 US Hwy 19, Suite 158, Clearwater, FL 33769, Phone: 727-210-2350; Fax: 727-210-2354, www.caahep.org.
Graduates of this program will sit for the certification examination offered by The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Students passing this examination become a board Certified Surgical Technologist with the ability to use their credentials in any state.
The professional organization, Association of Surgical Technologists, www.ast.org, can be searched for more information regarding the continuing education or testing requirements to maintain the credentials as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
Classes are informal and challenge each student to think critically. Knowing that each student is an individual with different learning styles, we offer course material in a variety of ways to enhance student learning and retention.
Experience varies from classroom lecture, directed self-study utilizing internet resources, interactive group projects, discussion, oral presentations, homework assignments, computerized testing, mock surgery, skills lab performance, oral testing, and hands-on clinical experience.
Emphasis is also placed on core work ethics, timeliness, proficiency, honesty and integrity related to professionalism in the healthcare setting. Students will scrub a minimum of 120 surgical cases.
Students will complete thirty (30) cases in General Surgery, with twenty (20) of those cases in the first scrub role. Students will also complete ninety (90) cases in various surgical specialties, with sixty (60) of those cases in the first scrub role, and evenly, but not necessarily equally distributed between a minimum of four (4) surgical specialties.
Our pass rate is stellar. Check out our Statistics page.
